The government of France has officially raised the cap on operating coal-fired power stations in January and February, according to a decree issued by the country on Sunday, according to media sources Feb. 7. France's ecology ministry proposed the relaxation in early January, saying it was necessary to ensure the safe supply of electricity during the cold winter months when electricity consumption is high. Coal units in France will be allowed to run for about 1,000 hours through the first two months of 2022, 300 hours more than the cap set in 2019 to help curb carbon emissions.
